Saturday, October 22, 2011 was National Make a Difference Day, a nationwide effort of volunteerism that engages all communities to plan and execute a one-day project that will impact their neighborhood, their community, their city. The Jersey City Parks Coalition (JCPC), in conjunction with the City of Jersey City, organized the BIG DIG as part of this initiative by planting 18,000 flowering bulbs with hundreds of volunteers throughout Jersey City's parks, open spaces and gateways. Pershing Field Garden Friends, a member of JCPC, enthusiastically participated in this event. Our planting was co-captained by Patricia O'Hanlon and Patrick Mangini. Along with our adult volunteers, we were fortunate to have student volunteers from PS 25, PS 27, MS 4, McNair High School, Academy 1, and Clifton High SchoolAdditionally, Pershing Fields Garden Friends' members captained 9 other sites throughout the Heights & Journal Square. It was an amazing day of volunteerism which will have long reaching positive effects throughout the Heights and Jersey City.

Pershing Field Garden Friends (PFGF) and the Jersey City Reservoir Preservation Alliance, in conjunction with the Jersey City Parks Coalition and the City of Jersey City Division of Parks & Forestry, successfully completed its Pershing Field Ninth Annual Spring Planting and Reservoir Spring Enhancement on May 7, 2011.  This project was made possible through a partnership with Goldman Sachs, a proud partner of the Coalition since 2004.

We would like to thank all those who participated in this most worthwhile project:

·        Our PFGF and Alliance volunteers Blake Hudson, Mary Lee, Patricia O'Hanlon, Pat Mangini, Albina Meluso, Christina Meluso, Vinny McNamara, Bob Murgittroyd, and Maggie Salemi, whose efforts made this project a huge success.

We were fortunate to have an excellent turn out of children from PS #27, Dickinson High School, Mc Nair High School, Englewood Academy and Brunswick Acres School. They were all a tremendous asset to our project. We are grateful to PFGF members Debby DeVenezia, John Faherty, Leigh Brickey and Paul Hope for their work behind the scenes.

·        Thanks to local merchants, Central Ave Liquors, Central Ave Stop & Shop, Pizza Masters, and ShopRite for donating food and beverages. Also, Podewitz Deli for their contribution to the event.

·        Thanks to Rodney Hadley, Director of Public Works for his ongoing support and cooperation. As always, Pershing Field employees Bob Stokes and Jose Nunez assisted us in our planting preparation, and John Moncayo worked with us throughout the day to make everything run smoothly.
